Print-on-Demand

What is POD?

Print-on-demand enables you and others in the bookselling industry to order books that are printed as needed. It achieves several goals easily, immediately and without a large and risky investment:

  1. Gets your book onto a distribution network of over 39,000 retailers, libraries, schools, internet commerce companies in Australia, New Zealand, the USA, the UK and Europe
  2. Enables you to print small runs (eg. 1–200)
  3. Eliminates the need to inventory large numbers of books that you aren’t sure to sell

How does it work?

Australian eBook Publisher will design your book for print and make all print on demand arrangements with our POD supplier. Once we have your print-ready book files we submit them to our POD supplier. The supplier charges us a fee for each individual book we submit. They charge this fee to keep your book on their server—these can be heavy files that take up a lot of space. But having your book set up with POD means you can have your books printed and shipped as needed, usually within 2–4 weeks from the eproof approval date.

Book layout and design

Please visit our book design page for more details about our top quality book typesetting services. If you're looking for the best book designers in Australia, contact us.

Cover
You can choose from hardcover and paperback

Book size (also known as trim size)
We can design books at any size. Our print on demand supplier offers dozens of options in paper size.

With novels and memoirs, we often work with books sized at B format (197mm x 129mm), a common paperback size. If you have a specific book size in mind please let us know. We will check the availability of your specifications with our POD supplier. If it is not possible via print-on-demand, we also provide print procurement. This is suited for print runs of 2,000+

Paper
You can choose to have a white or beige interior page colour. Look at your favourite books to find out what you prefer. Note: some book sizes impose limits on paper type. It's best to contact us for a quote.

Colour
Choose from black and white or colour interiors. Note: as POD is printed digitally, you will be able to see (upon very close inspection) the dotted print matrix. This is slightly more noticeable with greyscale images and text as they only print with black ink, so in order to create gradients they have to use a technique called ‘halftones’. If the highest quality gloss photography is important for your printed book, please ask us about print procurement.

Binding
Choose from:
Saddle stitch, perfect bound, case laminate (hardcover) and cloth binding (note: not all binding types are available for different page lengths and sizes. Please let us know your preferred binding and we will see if our POD supplier allows it).

Print-ready Files
Australian eBook Publisher will happily create the layout and cover for your book project. We are professional designers and have experience in creating many print book projects. We are sometimes also willing to work with your own, or your designer's, print ready files for a fee. If your files do not meet the specifications supplied, for any reason, we can provide instructions or fix the InDesign files for you at our hourly rate.

Submitting a new book to POD supplier

Contact us when you are ready to submit your book to our POD supplier. We will act as an intermediary, reducing the need for you to deal with any printing hassles or frustration.

Ordering a new print run

Once you have established a POD contract with us, simply let us know when you would like to order a new run of books. We will let you know the cost and charge you prior to ordering. Once paid, we will order the print run for you right away. Please allow 2–4 weeks for delivery.

Storing your books

Australian eBook Publisher will not store your printed books for you. When we order your print runs we will send them to your specified address. It is up to you to take care of the books once received.

Distribution

There are two types of print on demand project and we are flexible enough to work within your needs and budget.

1. Print on Demand WITHOUT distribution
You can order books from us any time, then distribute them directly to customers or outlets yourself.

2. Print On Demand WITH distribution
We make our POD books available on leading distribution partners, shown in the PDF. These distribution partners are, in turn, connected to tens of thousands of websites and outlets such as bookstores. In other words, we can make your printed book available to Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Booktopia, Book Depository, bookstores all over the world, and thousands of other online and offline retailers of books.

It is up to book stores to chose what they want to carry from the distributor catalogues they consider. If Australian book store sales and orders are important to you please visit our Marketing website: AustralianBook.Marketing

How much will I get paid?

This depends on so many factors that we are not able to give an answer here. For example, your RRP, the printing and shipping cost, the country and currency of the sale, and the discount offered by our POD supplier to retailers, to name a few.

To find out more about the discount that applies to the book retailer, please request our Payments PDF.

Next please consider what royalty we have offered in your aggregation contract.

To get an accurate guestimate of how much you will get paid, you will require a Publishing Cost Benefits Analysis.

Your Book on Vendors

Once we have loaded your book to POD and approve it for distribution it can take anywhere from 2–6 weeks to display your book on the distribution partners.

We like to warn customers that it is the distribution partner’s right to display the book however they like using the information we have provided. This may include not displaying the cover, or displaying the RRP differently to how it was supplied.

Charges

Include:

  • Printing (depends on size and type of book, paper, etc.)
  • Shipping (depends on above, as well as destination city to ship to)
  • Upload and coordination fee (our small markup to pay for our time)
  • Reupload fee (if applicable)
  • A renewal fee (to renew the contract with us when your contract runs out, usually every 2 years)
