Print on Demand Versus Offset Printing—What’s the difference

You might have heard of print on demand and offset printing but aren’t really sure what they’re all about or what the difference is in printing. We’re here to tell you in today’s blog.

Offset printing describes the printing process where the image (or page) is inked in each individual colour of the CMYK colour group (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) and then transferred to a rubber surface before being rolled onto the final printing surface. There are additionally colours, called Pantone colours that can be mixed for a print run, as well.

This kind of printing is most efficient when employed for large print runs (500 would be an absolute minimum).

When we say ‘print-on-demand’ we’re actually describing a business model and not a printing process. Print-on-demand is a service that allows an individual to supply their print ready files and have a book printed as they need it (on demand). This can be as little as a single copy. Print-On-Demand uses digital printing.

Digital printing is very similar in technique as your home office printer. The printer contains ink cartridges that use a dabbing method at high speed to distribute the ink on the page. This dabbing method looks like very small dots if you look closely at a printed page. The digital printer used by print-on-demand suppliers is much larger but functionally works the same. The paper is placed in the printer similarly to the way you place paper in your home printer.
