About the project
We created the print layout and cover design for Jonathan Richard's manuscript. This book also had involvement with West Moreton Hospital and Health Service, as the subject of the book. Being part of the Queensland Government health department, it was necessary to add in the requisite government logo to the cover and interior while following their branding guidelines.
We were provided with a large number of photographs to work with to go within the book. As these were very old images, we touched them up so that they would appear clearly in the print edition. There was also a large number of footnotes to work with on each page.
Once the print edition was designed we began developing the ebook. We adapted the footnoting so that they appeared as end-notes in the ebook version. After conversion, we distributed the ebook to iBooks, Google Play Books, Kindle and Kobo, and we distributed the print book via print on demand. Distribution was coordinated to tie in with Queensland Mental Health Week.
About the book
One hundred and fifty years of providing care to the mentally ill provides an opportunity to reflect on the lives, the work and the social forces involved in the mental health facility, now known as The Park – Centre for Mental Health. This book, which builds on previous projects to record the history of the hospital, highlights the ever-present tension between the available resources, the vision of administrators and staff, and also the constantly changing factors that shaped the hospital. The processes discussed in this book allow readers to see recurring themes and signs of steady improvement, as well as the role of the hospital as a crucial part of the community’s safety net. As the book shows, developments within the social and health systems have radically changed and reshaped the work of the hospital over the past 150 years.
