January/February 2015 Newsletter

Welcome to the new year! There’s some important tax information in this email newsletter. We’re also announcing our trademarked service Ebook Designer’s Touch™, a service that truly sets us apart from all other methods of ebook conversion. If you want an ebook that’s better lookin’ than Hugh Jackman, you need Ebook Designer’s Touch™!

As those of you who have ebooks “out there” already will know, this is a cutting edge, rapidly changing industry. There are ups and downs in the world of publishing that affect everyone, from the big publishers all the way down to individual writers. In an economy of austerity, it simply makes sense to publish ebooks with a much lower price-tag than printed book production. If the US is anything to go by (and it usually is a bit of a crystal ball for Australia!), ebooks are only going to increase in popularity. The take-up of tablets and ereading devices over Christmas means that now is a better time than ever to get your work released by an aggregator like us.

Please contact us about doing Your Book Your Way.

HIGHLIGHTED SERVICE

Ebook Designer’s Touch™

When the world was all print and no digital it was fairly easy to control what your reader was going to see when they opened your book. Because what you publish is exactly what they got. When ebooks started their rise in popularity, it soon became apparent that designers were going to have to work a little bit different to format books for e-readers. Considering nearly all ereaders and ereading apps allow the user to modify the display of the book, the elements introduced in the designing phase must suit this kind of reading environment.

With our expert knowledge of design and ebooks we can create an amazing ebook for you. Our Ebook Designer’s Touch™ will take your plain old manuscript and give it a facelift perfect for ebook conversion.

INDUSTRY NEWS
European Union tax law change affects ebook royalties

We recently received some news from Apple iBookstore:

“On January 1, 2015, value-added tax (VAT) rates for electronic books will change in most EU territories. VAT will be based on the customer’s country of residence instead of being the same across all EU territories.

Note that prices for books on iBooks include VAT, while the publisher’s proceeds are calculated after VAT is deducted. As a result, your proceeds for some book sales in the EU may change.”

Similar to the above news with Apple iBookstore, Amazon Kindle are also adjusting the way they work with VAT.

“Previously, if an author wanted to provide a suggested list price of "£1.99", he would have to set "£1.93" as the VAT-exclusive list price to account for the 3% VAT we would have applied. Now, authors can simply enter "£1.99" and we will deduct the applicable VAT to calculate royalties.” (Source)

Will VAT affect me?

The VAT change, from 1 January 2015, will only affect you if your ebook is selling in significant volumes in Europe. It means that your existing royalties will reduce slightly for sales in EU unless you increase the price there to account for the VAT. Where previously your £1.99 was only having tax deducted based on the location of Apple’s EU headquarters (Luxembourg, 3%) it will now depend on where your buyer is located. This will increase the tax to anything up to 25% (Denmark and Sweden).

We are offering to update prices for any ebooks with a sales volume in EU of at least £20 per month, free of charge. There are two sessions when we will be making these changes. First on 17 January, second session on 15 February 2015. You have until the day before each session to take up this offer.

Please contact us at: info@australianebookpublisher.com.au, using "VAT price change" as the subject of your email.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION
Can you scan my print book and create an ebook?

Yes!

While it is better to start with the manuscript in digital form (Word doc, PDF etc.) we can assist those who only have the print copy of their book.

In order to recreate your book digitally with live (searchable/editable) text we need to go through a scanning process then apply OCR (Optical Character Recognition). The OCR program recognises the letters and reforms them into live text.

While this process is continually improving, there are still some introduced errors. These are usually caught by a thorough proofread.

Once we have the digital manuscript we can begin the ebook conversion process as normal.

RECENT FEEDBACK

“Thank you for helping me realise my dream. My book, When Lollipop Ladies Attack!, came up beautifully. The designer was so easy to work with and always willing to hear my opinions and make changes, and the whole experience has been very satisfying. The Print on Demand option is surprisingly affordable and gives a self-published author the opportunity to see themselves in print at a very reasonable cost.”—Vicki Englund, author of When Lollipop Ladies Attack!

See you next time!
