It's time to start utilising the full capability of ebook reading devices and deliver multimedia ebooks to the multimedia generations.
Ebook technology has been a commercial phenomenon now for about ten years, though only in the last few have publishers started to see it as a serious and permanent format for the future.
Australian eBook Publisher is in the business of helping others to self-publisher. As such we have been able to learn on-the-job through some interesting multimedia ebook projects. We also published Managing Director, Amanda Greenslade's debut children's book Myra and the Magic Motorcycle with sound effects and media overlay (audio book narration) embedded in the epub for Apple and Amazon. The Kobo edition only has the media overlay due to lack of support from the Kobo device/app.
Many self-publishing businesses lag behind Australian eBook Publisher because they haven't had the multimedia focus and interest that we have had. When confronted by a question from our customers like 'Is it possible to include videos in a reflowing ebook' we would never say no. Instead, we would seek out the expertise to make it happen.
Currently our team is able to include audio (music and sound effects), video and media overlay in enhanced ePub3 and iBooks Author (Apple) and Amazon Kindle Interactive. We can also include media overlay in ePub for Kobo. If special interactivity is required we can offer JavaScript coding for ePub3 which is supported by Apple devices, and iBooks Author and Kindle Interactive which have set widgets to choose from and a drag and drop interface.
