Since about the year 2009 ebooks have been considered a significant but new and emerging market. Entrepreneurs, self-publishers and smaller publishers jumped on the ebook bandwagon long before the big publishers faced the inevitable change this would bring. Now in 2014 the ebook market is established and mainstream publishers' business models are being drastically changed.
There are many ways to create ebooks. One method publishers have used is to ship a carton of books to India and have them OCR-scanned and converted from hard copy to ebook formats. This introduces all kinds of errors (many of which you will have seen while reading ebooks), such as hyphens appearing in words that were on the edge of the page, not supposed to be hyphenated words.
Without a proper understanding of ebooks as software, publishers run the risk of diminishing their brands (themselves and their authors) by having ebooks that are defective, ugly or uncomfortable to use (eg. fixed layout books designed for print at a larger size than a tablet). Software needs to be updated as platforms are updated. It can have bugs or need other improvements that become apparent after extensive testing and user feedback.
Many of the ebooks on the market contain print-conversion errors. Publishers need to sit up and think about ebooks for what they are, not for electronically-smunched versions of their print counterparts.
